Physical Education

Intent

At Frithwood, we aim to provide a PE curriculum that children from Nursery to Year 6 not only enjoy but also allows them to experience a range of activities that help them to develop their health, fitness and wellbeing. We intern to offer a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all children to succeed and excel in competative sport and other physically demanding activities whilst meeting the National Curriculum aims. It provides opportunities for children to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activites build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

The National Curriculum for PE aims to ensure that all children:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • Engage in competative sports and activities
  • Lead healthy active lives

Implementation

PE at Frithwood uses the Striver scheme of work whereby children take part in a multi-skill and multi-ability programme of activities to develop their physical, social, cognitive, personal and creative abilities. They will also have the opportunity to experience games, athletics, dance, gymnastics, outdoor and adventurous activities and swimming within the curriculum. In addition, there is a range of extra-curricular sports clubs provided and the school participates in a variety of borough wide sports leagues, tournaments and events. Each class has two hours of high quality physical activity every week.  We employ the expertise of PSD Sports Coaches who supports teaching as well as providing after school clubs covering a range of skills.

We use a variety of teaching and learning styles in PE lessons. Our principal aim is to develop the children's knowledge, skills and understanding, and we do this through a mixture of whole-class teaching and individual or group activities. Teachers draw attention to good examples of individual performance as models for the other children, and we encourage the children to evaluate their own work as well as the work of other children. Within lessons, we give the children the opportunity both to collaborate and to compete with each other, and they have the opportunity to use a wide range of resources. We work with PSD coached to develop Frithwood's engagement in local sporting events and provide more opportunities for children to represent the school.

In all classes, children have a wide range of physical ability. Whilst recognising this fact, we provide suitabel and equal learning opportunities for all children. We do this by setting the same activity for all, however, we use our professional teacher judgement to change and differentiate the activity so that all children are challenged.

We achieve this through a range of strategies:

  • Setting common tasks that are open-ended
  • Concentrating on achieving your personal best score
  • Setting tasks of increasing difficulty
  • Providing a range of challenge through the provision of different resources

Impact

The impact of the PE curriculum is that the children will meet their age-appropriate skills in Physical Education and be able to transfer these skills into other sports and everyday activities. It is hoped that physical education will light a love of sport and physical activity, so that our children will engage in extra-curricular sporting opportunities provided by the school and local clubs and agencies. Through our Physical Education curriculum, we believe we can equip children with skills in team building, promote physical and mental health and boost confidence and resilience.

Children demonstrate a good understanding and interest in a broad range of sports. Children have a sound understanding of the fundamental movement skills and can use actions and techniques with control and fluency. All children will have a good understanding of map reading skills and are capable to work as a team to solve problems.

Frithwood children have had opportunities to compete in many school tournamens across the borough, implementing what they have learnt in a competative setting. Children take part in extra-curricular activity lunchtime and after school clubs delivered by school staff or PSD coaches.
