Mathematics
Intent
It is our intent that children will develop a positive attitude in their learning, through a passion and fascination for Maths and its fundamental part of everyday life. At Frithwood we believe that a high quality maths education provides our pupils with a foundation for understanding the world. We want to offer children as many chances as they can to enrich their Mathematics skills, so that they develop a love and sense of curiosity for the subject.
We aim for pupils to:
- Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics so that they are able to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
- Become curious mathematicians who show resilience, perseverance and independence
- Reason mathematically using mathematical language
- Be able to solve problems by applying their mathematics skills to a variety of new and abstract contexts
- Have a deep understanding of their learning.
Implementation
High quality, relevant and engaging Maths lessons are taught daily, covering a broad and balanced mathematical curriculum including elements of number, calculation, geometry, measures and statistics. Maths teaching is differentiated to ensure all pupils are challenged and able to excel. High achievers in Maths are challenged and deepen their understanding through problem solving and reasoning. On-going assessment and feedback helps to identify children who need additional support, who are provided with extra time for consolidation and interventions to support their learning.
Pupils at Frithwood are actively encouraged to show and prove their understanding and reasoning. Pupils enjoy online activities to enhance their learning at home, such as Times Tables Rockstars and Mathletics. We teach Mathematics in a cross curricular manner to promote the practical application of maths skills. We use a range of resources to ensure that the curriculum is specific to each child’s needs, with an emphasis on concrete resources and pictorial representations at all ages.
Impact
Pupils at Frithwood engage confidently in Maths activities and are confident to ‘have a go’. They understand the relevance and importance of what they are learning and demonstrate a quick recall of number facts and strategies.
Through our enriched Maths curriculum, pupils will not only strengthen their understanding of Mathematical concepts, but will leave Frithwood with the Mathematical skills needed to empower them in their everyday experiences in the wider world.
